There was a parking ticket on the windscreen when they came out. Eira tore it off without even looking at it.

“We need to call this in,” she said. “Anything could have happened to him. We need the prosecutor on board.”

Silje looked up at the sky, which was almost the exact same shade as the tarmac.

“Last time,” she said slowly, “after his divorce—something GG claimed was a mutual decision, reached by consensus—he boarded one of the ferries to Finland. And we all know what people do on those.”

“Drink,” said Eira. “Play on the slot machines.” She had been on a few teenage booze cruises herself, but that was all a long time ago now.

“Yeah, well, he was gone for several days, and it definitely wasn’t because of the dinner buffet.”

Eira thought back to their evening in Härnösand. Had GG ordered a glass of wine because he was staying over, or was it the other way around? Did he stay over so that he could drink? Another occasion came back to her, a morning when he had seemed particularly under the weather and she thought she could smell it on him, but she had never thought any more of it. Everyone drank from time to time, especially when they were out of town. What else was there to do in the evening?

“He spent several days going back and forth over the Bothnian Sea,” Silje continued. “Checked in to a hotel over there for a few nights, too. He needed to see the horizon, that’s what he said when he eventually came back and got his life in order. A hell of a reason to go on a bender like that.”

She gazed past Eira, towards the sea, which stretched out somewhere beyond the stone buildings flanking the central boulevard.

“He’s not an alcoholic, that’s not what I’m saying. Not that I know of, anyway, I really don’t think he is. But when GG hits rock bottom, that’s what he does. So long as he does his job, it’s none of my business.”

Her colleague sounded angry, looked angry, but she had also gone to the effort of getting his keys. Why? To protect him? So that no one else would work out what was going on?

“We can’t go into any more apartments as a favor to the family,” said Eira.

“You’re right, of course.”

“Do you want to do it, or should I?”

“I’ll call the prosecutor from the road.”

They drove separately, neither sure where they would end up later. Eira had one of the commercial radio stations turned up high, jingles about instant wins and everything you could ever wish for at a DIY store in Birsta.

The retail parks on the outskirts of town raced by, the traffic thinning out when they reached the E4. Eira kept her eyes on the road. Not in the broad, natural sense, to spot turnoffs and fellow road users, but staring down at the tarmac disappearing beneath the hood, kilometer after kilometer of hard, rough surface.

There could be plenty of perfectly innocent reasons why GG wasn’t answering his phone.
